COVINGTON, Ky. — A historic Northern Kentucky building received new life Tuesday as Hotel Covington opened its doors.
After a $22 million restoration, the building that once housed the iconic Coppin’s Department Store has been transformed into a shopping destination and upscale hotel.
The space was developed by the Aparium Hotel Group and The Salyers Group, which transformed the once-thriving department store into a 114-room luxury hotel.
The building was Kentucky’s first modern skyscraper and housed the former high-end Coppin’s Department Store. The hotel was started with a horse race, as John Coppin’s bet on a long shot garnered him a winning ticket, which he cashed in to construct the store.
Coppin’s grew into one of the largest retailers in the region, thriving from 1910 to 1977.
The century-old building was re-energized by Covington-based Hub + Weber Architects and Plume Interiors + Light.
The new hotel features numerous amenities and dining options, including Coppin’s Restaurant & Bar, The Coffee Bar and The Walk Up.
